LS-255 E - new float switch for harsh environments

Float switches are a dime a dozen - but float switches for harsh environments like submarines are few and far between. After 30 years of experience with the proven float switches type LS-240E it was time to develop a new product with improved features.

A customer driven development project

For more than a year, we asked existing and potential customers about their wishes and suggestions for improvement regarding their experience with float switches. The result was inspiration and specifications for the development of a new type of float switch.

Leave the tried and tested

Basically, everyone was satisfied with the function and reliability of the existing float switches. A new development should in no way jeopardize the proven performance characteristics. So the design of the new LS-255E was based on the proven components to ensure the familiar features:

  • Media resistance, e.g. for the bilge
  • Pressure resistance
  • Plug-in connection, for quick assembly and interchangeability
  • Tightness, even when unplugged
  • Shock resistance
  • Two switching contacts (DPST), for verification of function

Less is more

Compared to the old design, the new LS-255E is significantly smaller in size and weight, which is particularly useful in submarines:

  • 40% less in diameter
  • 30% less volume
  • 45% less weight

Handling is the biggest advantage

According to the customer, the greatest potential for improvement lies in handling. Since the float switches are often located in places that are difficult to access and are also installed in a very confined space, it is important, for example, that no loose parts can fall off during assembly/disassembly. Thus, all parts are mounted from above and the protective tube serves as a ‘container’ for the float. The float itself is symmetrical in design and cannot be installed incorrectly, a plus in low light conditions. The specially designed spring that secures the switch tube is placed on top of the switch tube so that it hangs on it. There are no threads, nuts or other critical fasteners and no tools are required. Items that seem minor for a low-maintenance product but can become immensely important in critical situations.
